Galway’s live music guide: Sunday 16th December

Happy sunny Sunday to all you beautiful Christmas party ready Galwegians! Only 9 sleeps to go before the big day and the town is buzzing with festive cheer and an abundance of mood lighting!

The infamous watering holes of Galway have gone all out with their decorations this year in an effort to make ya’ll feel warm and fuzzy inside and the musical community are on hand to do their Christmas thing! Lot’s of stuff going on around the town today, Craft markets, Pantomime, festive food and music, music, music…Here are just some of the events taking place:

Noriana KennedyKelvin BusherNiall Teague and The V are just some of the amazing musicians who can often be found singing at The Salthouse Bar Sunday Music Session alongside some of the finest music-makers in Galway. Guaranteed to deliver some proper seasonal vibes this session kicks off at 4:30pm and fills up fast so get in early! Sin a Deir Sí perform their high energy traditional irish music set downstairs in Monroe’s Galwayfrom 6pm. Richie Brennan and the Vibe Tribe will be doing their old-school Rock and Blues thing in E-Brun from around 6:30pm.Pa Sheil and Fergal McDonagh take to the stage in the Quays Bar Galway at 7pm to bring you all those seasonal hits  If  you’re down the west be sure and drop into The Blue Note Galway and catch The SeshWans performing all the songs in front of the fire/heater from around 7pm. Szymon Misniak once again curates the finest in winter Jazz downstairs in Il Vicolo from 7:30pm.

The incredible David Keenan brings his own brand of magic to the Róisín Dubh tonight for what promises to be one of the gigs of the year so get along early! Doors at 8pm. Doors for the Open Mic Night at Róisín Dubhopen at around 8:30pm and the nights proceedings will be presided over by the venerable Steven Sharpe and Trass Bee

Mouse McHugh continues to bring festive cheer to the stage downstairs in Monroe’s Galway at 8:30pm. Greg Cotter and Mary Flanagan will be keeping the Country/Folk flame lit in the Crane bar from around 9pm. Jade Reynolds and the gentlemen of The Rollover take to the stage in Massimo Bar Galway at 9:30pm

If you happen to across the river then be sure to drop into Tigh Neachtainfor the Jug Band Christmas Bash. These guys get wild so be sure to bring your dancing shoes  The ever smiling Turlock Holmes will be on hand to censor any questionable lyrics when he performs alongside Pyramid in the Quays Bar Galway at 10:15pm. Bass virtuoso Karl Clews will be getting all funky with The Superfreaks in the Dail Bar at 10:30pm and we will be taking to the stage in the Róisín Dubh at 12 midnight.

Well it’s been an industrious week in band camp as the festive fever takes hold and the “Christmas Carol Solo” competition heats up! Every Christmas I ask the guys to throw in a well known xmas tune into their solos. Most number of recognisable solos wins!! So there you have it folks, it’s another super busy day in our little city and if you guys make it to the end of the night we would only love to have the pleasure of your company in the back room of the Róisín Dubh where we will be doing our best to keep Monday at bay for just a little while longer…
